what brings maine residents to therapy

What brings Maine residents to therapy

Maine is large, rural, and spread out, and access to therapists with specialized training thins quickly once you leave Portland. Many of the adults I work with here have felt that gap firsthand: long drives to the nearest clinician, months-long waitlists, or a short list of local options that don't match what they're actually carrying. Layered on top are the things Maine life can quietly compound, long dark winters, geographic isolation, and a culture that prizes self-reliance and getting by.

The people I see are often high-functioning by external measures: work handled, responsibilities met, a life that looks stable from the outside. What brings them in is the distance between that outward picture and how they actually feel underneath, whether that's complex trauma, anxiety, burnout, or a relationship with substances that has been managed rather than addressed.

I work with Maine adults who are holding a lot, often quietly and for a long time, and want care that meets the real depth of what's there.

Specialized care, wherever in Maine you are.

licensure

Maine licensure, and what it means for you

Telehealth therapy in Maine requires the therapist to hold an active license in the state where the client is physically located at the time of the session. I hold an active LCSW credential recognized by the Maine Board of Social Worker Licensure, so you're receiving care from a clinician legally authorized to practice in Maine and accountable to the state's licensing standards. Alongside my clinical social work license, I hold an LCADC credential and specialized training in substance use, which informs the addiction and co-occurring work I do with Maine clients.

If you live in Maine but travel regularly to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, or Texas, you can continue sessions while in any of those states. I hold an active LCSW in all five.

You're receiving care from a clinician accountable to Maine licensing standards, with specialized depth in trauma and addiction that's hard to find locally in much of the state.

how it works

How online therapy works for Maine residents

Online therapy for Maine residents works the same way as in-person therapy, with one difference: you connect via a secure video platform instead of driving to an office. You receive a unique session link by email before each appointment and join from any private space in Maine with a stable internet connection. In a state where the nearest specialized clinician can be an hour or more away, and where winter weather can make regular travel unreliable, that difference matters.

Whether you're in Portland, South Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, Augusta, Biddeford, or a rural or Down East community far from any clinic, access to specialized care no longer depends on your proximity to an office. A growing body of research shows online therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person work for anxiety, depression, complex trauma, and substance use.

The difference between online and in-person therapy is logistical. The depth of the clinical work doesn't change.

what we work on

What we work on

Therapy here addresses a wide range of concerns, with particular depth in complex trauma and attachment wounds, anxiety, depression and chronic low mood, burnout, substance use and addiction recovery through a harm-reduction lens, relational stress, identity concerns, and stressful life transitions. These rarely exist in isolation; the work treats them as interconnected, not as separate diagnoses addressed in sequence.

Because I hold an LCADC credential and specialized training in substance use in addition to my clinical social work license, I bring depth in addiction and co-occurring conditions that most psychotherapists in private practice don't carry, particularly relevant for clients whose patterns around substances are part of a broader picture of trauma, burnout, or relational difficulty.

This is trauma-informed care with a specialized depth in addiction recovery, co-occurring conditions, and the nervous system roots of both.

my approach

My approach

My approach is integrative, drawing from Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing, psychodynamic and attachment-informed therapy, CBT, DBT, REBT, ACT, exposure therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. I'm a second-year student at Somatic Experiencing International and have completed MAPS MDMA-assisted psychotherapy training.

Much of what drives anxiety, burnout, relational patterns, and addictive behavior isn't primarily cognitive. It's rooted in the nervous system, past experiences, and learned adaptations that keep operating in the present. Effective work addresses this at the level where the patterns actually live.

This approach goes deeper than insight: it works with the whole person, including the body and its learned responses.

questions

Online therapy in Maine, answered

Do I need to be physically in Maine for my sessions?

Yes. Licensing law requires you to be physically located within Maine at the time of each session. Because I also hold an active LCSW in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Texas, sessions can continue without interruption while you travel between those five states. Sessions cannot legally occur while you're in a state where I'm not licensed.

What is an LCSW in Maine?

LCSW stands for Licensed Clinical Social Worker. In Maine, the clinical social work license is issued by the Maine Board of Social Worker Licensure and requires a Master of Social Work, supervised post-graduate clinical experience, and passing the national ASWB clinical examination. An LCSW is authorized to diagnose mental health conditions and provide psychotherapy.

Do you work with addiction and substance use for Maine clients?

Yes. In addition to my clinical social work license, I hold an LCADC credential (Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor) and specialized training in substance use and co-occurring conditions that most psychotherapists don't carry. That expertise informs the addiction and harm-reduction work I do with Maine clients under my Maine clinical license.

Does insurance cover online therapy in Maine?

I'm a private-pay, out-of-network provider and don't bill Maine carriers directly. Many plans have out-of-network mental health benefits that may provide partial reimbursement via a Superbill I provide monthly. Call your insurer and ask specifically about out-of-network mental health benefits and reimbursement rates for LCSW services before starting.

How do I find a trauma therapist in rural Maine?

Access to therapists with specialized trauma training is limited across much of rural Maine, which is exactly where telehealth helps most. Look for a clinician with specific training in trauma-focused modalities such as Internal Family Systems or Somatic Experiencing rather than someone who simply lists trauma as a general specialty, confirm they hold an active Maine LCSW, and ask for a free consultation before you commit.

Can I continue therapy with you if I travel or move seasonally?

Yes, as long as your travel takes you to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, or Texas, where I also hold an active LCSW. This is useful for Maine residents who spend part of the year in a warmer state. Sessions cannot occur while you're in a state where I'm not licensed, so if you travel outside these five states we plan for continuity of care during intake.

Is online therapy in Maine as effective as in-person?

Research consistently finds telehealth produces comparable outcomes to in-person therapy for most adult presentations, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use. For Maine in particular, where distance and winter weather can make regular in-person attendance difficult, secure video sessions often make consistent care far more achievable.
